150 YEARS OF PITTBURGH STREETCARS
TO BE CELEBRATED AT THE
PENNSYLVANIA TROLLEY MUSEUM
The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum (PTM) is proud to announce a special event celebrating 150 years of Pittsburgh streetcars. From Thursday August 6th through Sunday August 9th the PTM will offer a variety of displays and activities, from 10 AM to 5 PM. This event is inspired by the 150th anniversary of Pittsburgh’s first horse car line, the Citizens Passenger Railway, which began operation along Penn Avenue on August 6, 1859. PTM preserves the only Pittsburgh horsecar in existence and it will be featured along with historic electric Pittsburgh streetcars, as well as photographs, showing the development of the street railway over the past 150 years. For the first time, the public will be allowed inside the horse car and a costumed interpreter will explain the life of a horse car operator.
Visitors will start with a tour with a streetcar ride to the Trolley Display Building. All tours begin 15 minutes past the hour, with the first tour at 10:15 am with the last tour will departing at 4:15. There will also be a memories area where visitors will be invited to share their trolley memories for our archives. Also of interest is our photographic exhibit “LET’S RIDE! ... 150 Years of Pittsburgh’s Transit History.” This exhibit, in our main building, contains approximately 30 images selected from PTM’s Miller Library and other collections. It features many of the vehicles used through the years to serve the area’s transit passengers including some uncommon subjects, as well. In addition visitors take a trolley on a scenic four-mile trolley ride and get a guided tour of the Museum’s original car house. There is a museum store, theater, picnic area and free parking.
These special activities are included with the normal price of admission which is $9 Adults, $8 Seniors ages 62+, and $5 Children 3-15. Infants 2 and under are free. There is also special family rate this year of $30 which covers up to two adults and four children.
Visitation has grown over the last few years with over 24,000 people visiting PTM during 2008 from all over the world. The Trolley Display Building is a 28,000 square foot facility that showcases almost 30 electric railway passenger, freight and work cars from Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. The Museum’s spring and fall hours are Fridays and Mondays from 10-4 and Saturdays and Sundays from 11-5. From Memorial Day through Labor Day they are Monday-Friday 10-4 and Saturdays and Sundays 11-5.
