East Site Expansion
Based on this growth, outstanding volunteer service, expanded educational outreach and increased support, the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum's Board decided to launch a major expansion program. It was designed to significantly expand the Museum's impact as a regional gateway tourism attraction and its educational outreach programs.
To reach that goal, the Board has undertaken a three-phase expansion project, which includes:
- Phase I- Construction of a 1/2 mile track extension of the current demonstration trolley line linking the current Museum with a nearby 12-acre expansion site. Included the installation of McClane Loop, allowing our single ended cars to be fully utilized.
(Phase I is complete!)- Phase II- Site preparation and construction of a 25,000 square-foot trolley display building and trolley maintenance annex. This building houses 32 streetcars, many that were recently stored outdoors. Public tours are being conducted. The next projects are a new trolley power substation behind the Trolley Display Building and connection of the building tracks to the trolley line.
- Phase III- Construction of a 55,000 square-foot Visitor Center. The new Visitor Center will allow the Museum to properly display and interpret exhibits that tell the fascinating story of Pennsylvania's Trolley Era. The building will also house the Museum's significant archival and photo collections in a secure and climate-controlled environment. One side of the Visitor Center will feature "Trolley Street"- a recreation of a typical 1920s era streetscape. Trolley Street will allow the Museum's streetcars to be operated and displayed in context. The urban streetscape will nicely complement the mostly rural trolley ride experience of the other end of the Museum's demonstration trolley line.
(Phase III is scheduled to begin in 2006.)
